First Nations Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative
Harmonizing First Nations and Government in
Managing the Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic
The mountain pine beetle’s mark on the forest -- its ecosystems, habitat, water and wildlife -- is matched by its impact on First Nations. Cultural and traditional ways of life are being threatened by the devastation caused by the mountain pine beetle epidemic.
The impact on forests, livelihood and overall quality of life is affecting the social, economic and spiritual well being of over one hundred First Nations communities in British Columbia.
By building effective relationships between First Nations, government, industry and communities, the First Nations Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative is helping to manage and reduce the impact of the mountain pine beetle infestation, and exercising Aboriginal title and rights to the land.
In the spirit of B.C.’s New Relationship, the vision of the First Nations Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative is to harmonize First Nations and government in managing the mountain pine beetle epidemic.
